A set of nice features

I like the idea. I think its more of a nice idea than a critical idea though, but I'm not complaining.

I think we need a list of "nice ideas" that come with Geeklog 1.3, things that are value-added (not that themes and plugin's arn't).

Here is my list:

Story Rating System - See above
Story Parser - It would be nice to make a system where you can add words to a list, and when a story is submitted, it can be parsed (on by default, but can be ticked off for speed). For example, you could add Geeklog as a word, and when the story is parsed, it is automatically replaced with Geeklog (a bold anchor link to the site). The censorship system can also be moved to this, instead of being hard coded into the config.
Smilie System - Same as above, but replaces :) with a image of a smiling face. Again, the system should allow for more to be added.
New Link system - A more Yahoo-like link system is needed, with Catagories, ratings, etc.

Part of this is really easy! We use a parsing scheme like bbcode .. i emailed the list about this one. We call it GLML. We can have commands like:

{b}test<{/b}
{img logo}
{:)}

etc .. We apply your URL parser so Yahoo becomes an automatic link, and we add the {free}Yahoo{/free} so it\'s NOT linked to.

As for a Yahoo like service, there is something out there already we can use .. the Open Directory Project code is available.

Some thoughts on rating system:

What will be the performance hit for the rating system?

Admin should be able to turn ratings on/off. On a per story basis?

Only logged in users be able to submit ratings -- once per rateable item.

Some kind of trust metrix system so that users can\'t manipulate ratings by creating bogus accounts and submitting ratings?

Rating system in the form of plug in.

What are the priorities of the project?
- creating a rock-solid, fast, expandable well documented core AND developing add ons in form of plugins

or

- creating a feature-rich core applicable to a wider range of requirements right out of the box?

Overall -- great job with GL so far!
I\'ve been following development since v 1.0 and am very impressed by the work of this team!

Something like this could easily be done with a PHP block (now in geeklog 1.3 CVS tree). We can have Geeklog come with a number of blocks that can be enable/disabled (not yet implemented) so that way you have a slick way of including/removing such blocks.

Right now the priorites of the project are simple, add plugin support (95% done), improved security (95%) done and themes/templates (Mark, %90?).

After that it will be a process of improving the plugin API, improving the core GL codebase (move to OO framework) and then adding some more bells and whistles.
