Is there a way to let members choose an icon to represent them on the site and then display that icon anywhere and everywhere their member name appears?
If this is already answered somewhere then a point and nudge in the right direction would be much appreciated!

Not sure what you mean by 'icon' but I assume you mean by some sort of image or photo. Yes, user can upload a 'photo' to their account profile. We try to use the photo in places where it made the most sense but it's not *everywhere*. ---The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.

The Forum plugin puts the user photo next to each post. And you can make it show up in stories (but not comments) when you change the story templates.

Do images currently pose a security risk in GL 1.37sr2? I currently have all image functionality disabled.

1.3.7sr2 should fix the problems with image upload that earlier versions had.
If you allow the use of the <img> tag in stories and comments, then that may pose a problem since it allows people to inject scripts into their posts - but there's not much Geeklog could do here ...

I believe the original poster might have been referring to the concept of letting new users choose from an EXISTING GRAPHICAL list of icons.
Sort of like the expressions you can use in a forum post.
I come from heavy
Fusetalk usage ($, coldfusion) where you could choose from a small list of faces for your user image.
I have a list of a few hundred nice little 3k icons. Maybe we can trade some PHP tweaking for the GIFs
