I'm one of those guys that are stuck with hosting account where PHP4 only is provided (and even that is 4.2.something).
The customer support of this hosting company offered me a "free" upgrade to a PHP 5.3 server for $200.
I'm a broke student and can't afford that. And even if I could, I'd probably just switch provider instead.
So, I'm wondering if any of you guys knows of a place where I can get some free PHP5 hosting or if anyone would be kind enough to offer me a subdomain or a subdirectory. My database server works fine, so I don't need that, just a webserver with PHP (with openSSL extention would be great). This will be just for testing, so the traffic will be minimal.
Thanks,
Rouslan

You get what you pay for. Seriously, you can't afford a $5-6 a month account somewhere? The only big cost is buying a domain up front for like $15-25 for two years depending on who you buy from.

Well, I already have a $5/month hosting plan and a domain name that I'm stuck with that until next May. Problem is that these guys don't upgrade the software, so it's 4 years old.

I checked out a few that I know of but none seem to offer OpenSSL with their free service.

Rouslan,
I can set a subdomain on geeklog.fr if you need but openssl is not installed. Email me please.

Well for those that need a good service with updated equipment and software, you could go with
Bluehost[*1] for $6.95/mo. I haven't had any serious issues with them. I've recommended all my customers to them when they are looking for a new hosting provider. Click on the bluehost link to see what they offer. Its quite a bit.

That for your replies. I just found some very reasonably priced vps. In fact for lees that what I'm paying for shared hosting. I might give that a try some time soon.
@Ben: thanks for your offer
