I've been looking for a portal for a while now. It must be able to do the following:

-- Be able to hide some content from the public, but show content to registered users.
-- The public can not become members until they are approved.
--File download area.
--Forums.
--Image Gallery.

Can geeklog meet these requirements? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Quite simply....yes.
The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.

A lil more in depth (with respect to your list)

-- Geeklog dedication to security and the security model
-- in the config.php you may specify whether users submit into a user submission queue; approve them when YOU want
-- filemgmt plugin
-- forum plugin (currently @ version 2.2, with 2.3 in development)
-- gallery 1.4-pl1 integration pack, or 4images integration

if you want a working example of the gallery, checkout my site: okanagangirlz.com/gallery and Blaine has a good 4images integration over at http://www.langfamily.ca/gallery/

If your php runs in safe-mode you can also use MIG as a simple gallery wich could be simply integrated.

like here: gekow.net

I know that Gallery and 4images are more powerful, and I use them where fitting. But the Geekary plugin is integrated completely as only a plugin can be. I use it where it fits as well. I used the language capability to rename it Media Gallery throughout the sites and it goes over quite well. It is based loosely on 4images.

Thanks for the help.

I just installed GL, and it kicks ass. It's everything I need (so far). First question though. I need to post a story to the Home page, however I don't want it to show in any of my topics. Is there a way that I can accomplish this? Or, another way to ask the question is that I want text on the home page welcoming users to the site (via a story or anything else) that doesn't show on any other pages except the home page.

Thanks!

Christian

You can create stories that only show up in the topic but not on the home page - but not the other way around.

You could use a static page for a "welcome message", though.
