I'm looking to integrate an online genealogy viewer like PhpGedView (http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net) and I was wondering if someone did an integration of that sort.

I'm not so sure you'd want to integrate a genealogy program into a geeklog setup, unless you could keep the data seperate, i.e. similar to having gallery integrated, but not searchable.

Let me explain why before you question my sanity.

I use Next Generation Genealogy Site Building ( http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php - well worth the $27) alongside geeklog. I use geeklog for the gallery software (for personal, non-genealogy related photos), for the forums, for news, and for static pages, recipes, etc.

We use a lot of our real names on the geeklog side. If the GL and the TNG sides were integrated, and you go do a search, your going to come up with a lot of things to sort through. I.e. if you do a search on the surname Brown, your going to hit all of the Brown entries, any news and forum posts by anybody with the name of Brown, any contact lists, etc. and it's a mess.

By keeping the TNG and GL side seperate, when people go in to do serious genealogy work, or even just browsing, and they search, they are going to get exactly what they are looking for.

It adds a degree of complexity, and believe me, I agonized over it, because TNG Genealogy software does integrate with a few of the major portals, but after trying out other users sites where everything was integrated, I decided that the best bet was to keep the genealogy side seperate from the GL side.

Now the TNG/genealogy software programmer has indicated that he will work with integrating TNG into portal software, and were he to do so, I'd be tempted, but only if I could keep the data/searches truly seperate.

A simple work around for this is to just not integrate the GL search into the geneology data. Use a separate search engine, provided by the geneology software, or the plugin author, to search the geneology database. Because a thing is integrated doesn't mean it has to employ every function available to it.
