I am going to finally get a Dedicated Serve.
But I don't know much about them.
And one of the big things I noticed is the web hosting control panel system.
Like , Plesk and/or Ensim Control Panels.
I am not looking to resale.
But I do want to host 4 websites on 1 server.
I also want some way to set up E-mails easy for others.
And lets not forget MySql. lol


So what Control Panels have you used and how did you like them.

I run a web hosting company and we use PLESK. The servers OS is RedHat Enterprise ES 3. It runs really smooth and allows full administration over every account. We get really good feedback from our clients claiming it to be the best experience. So all in all I say use PLESK.

Plesk is an RPM based distribution that requires MySQL info and rewrites .conf files every change you make. You "should" use proprietary RPM's that are "Plesk-safe" (which SWsoft themselves don't release) or risk breaking the control panel. The configuration for Apache alone is convoluted and down right disturbing (httpd.conf, httpd.include, seperate httpd.include for every domain, vhost.conf (special config file for custom config)), doesn't include any options to disable php openbasedir or php-cgi. Also, the prices are absurd - domain licenses, proprietary antivirus ($300USD when clamav would work just as well). The only good thing about Plesk is qmail, which is a null-void statement in the fact that its a proprietary bastardized implementation - It would be better to setup vpopmail w/qmail than use Plesk. Dare I forget the "Power Pack" that is required to use Tomcat, Spamassassin, Addon scripts, etc.

I would personally recommend cPanel. Compile from source (Apache, PHP and modules), no background MySQL requirement, doesn't break as often, supports good opensource apps (spamassassin, clamav) as well as addon scripts (geeklog, phpbb, e107, etc) without having to pay for the "Power Pack" - its all included.

I've been using cpanel for about 5 years and also worked for a hosting company that had a cpanel license. I definitely recommend it. I have never used plesk or the other but then again, why would I ever have to?

My host (not dedicated) Uses Ensim Control Panel.
But it's almost like a hacked up thing.
I may take you up on playing with your cpanel.
I need to read up more on them first.
I am trying to learn it all.
Just takes a lot of time.
Dedicated is something that really worries me.
So I want to be ready when I make that leap.

So any info you can give me well be great.
You can read the sites all you want.
But it's not like really having it.
So I rather ask people that has used the deferent programs.

Yeah I have a box running a cPanel server as well and it does Rock. Love cPanel with RVskins and Fantastico.

I have looked at vDeck, Ensim and plesk as well but none compare to cPanel with the two plugins RVSkins and Fantastico.

I've got accounts on dedicated servers running both Ensim and cPanel (both are Linux-based systems). cPanel is so much easier to use than Ensim. I think part of it was that cPanel was designed specifically for Linux systems, while Ensim has to have a variety of features that work both on Windows and Linux.

I've also used Ensim on a Windows system, as well as Webmin. I'd definitely recommend cPanel over all of the rest.

I have used all three. Never went back to Ensim. I have two servers right now, one with CPanel, and a new one with Plesk 7.52. I don't know about what forgot-to-login talked about is still true for Plesk 7.52. So far it is costing me less using Plesk than using CPanel.

As for usage, it takes more time to learn Plesk than CPanel. That's why clients like CPanel. When learned, Plesk gives me more control as a host. I don't know how to compare. Both are good depending on what you are looking for. Plesk makes me feel I am in control, and CPanel makes me feel I don't have to be in control. So both give me confort. I would give Plesk a little edge because I learned more about server management using Plesk than all these years that I have been using CPanel.

So you decide. If you have time and desire to learn server admin, choose Plesk. If you don't want to bother and want something more of plug-n-play, choose CPanel.

Webhostingtalk.com is definitly the place to visit for such information. If you check there on the topic of Plesk vs. CPanel debates, you will find out those that like Plesk are the ones that have used both for an extended time. Most of those favor CPanels haven't used Plesk much.

Actually, I ran into a problem that I never had with CPanel, so thought it was Plesk to blame, but that turned out to be wrong.

Because of its security priority, Plesk needs a few extra steps to set up Geeklog. Once I get used to it, I am starting to get comfortable.

I just saw the price tag for cPanel $1250.00, Don't know if that is cheap or reasonable. I guess if you have enough customers it's reasonable but if your on a budget that may be a little steep.

I had just a web reseller account w/ cPanel and WHM(webhostmanager) which is really nice when you have multiple websites/domains. The company I was with was www.hoststock.com and they are really cheap. I don't know about a dedicated server though that would be nice if you can afford it. Try and go with cPanel though, and if you can get Webhostmanager as well they are really helpful.

I don't know where you found that price. It should tell you what's included. It depends on how you are going to use it, how many servers you are going to use it for, including unlimited support, etc.

Normally, you would lease a dedicated server and pay $20-$30 a month extra for the control panel of your choice. For example check out here.

That $1200 is the price of a license, that is so a company can sell as many installations of cPanel as they want with their accounts, the end user wouldn't pay for cPanel necessarily. If a company does not include cPanel and has a license, and wants you to pay extra to have it on your account, they are probably not a very good company. It is stupid to have a license and not have it included in your accounts as an incentive for people to host with them.

We are talking about dedicated servers, and I think you are talking about webhosts.

If I want a dedicated server without CPanel, let's say I want to install the free Webmin, I would never buy from a company that has CPanel liscense cost already added to the price of the servres. Even the largest data center like EV1 sells CPanel, Plesk, or Ensim, for an added cost. Don't be too quick to judge them as stupid.

I know you were talking about dedicated servers, I was just explaining how I used my control panels and why they were good, and suggesting that he should definately use Cpanel / WHM. I wasn't suggesting using the same plan I was.
