A long time ago....

A pal of mine set me up on Geeklog 1.3.11 and let me configure it to my liking.

Took a lot of time to learn how to change color of the panel, etc....

Okay, two-three years later he dropped off the face of the earth and I am left wondering how to update. While the latest version sounds great, I just want better spam - comment control. So if an incremental upgrade will do that without wrecking havoc on my live page, wonderful.

I dont want to rebuild the look, so a clean and easy (ha!) upgrade would be preferable... lets say the more foolproof the better.

Any advice? Am I compltely screwed? I barely know my way around the database and file structure.

What is the best upgrade path, the cleanest, the safest, and the most documented for newbies.

I emplore you, please help me!

Themes are very different from 1.3.11 to 1.4.1. You will need to translate your theme changes. The upgrade itself is smooth if you can read and follow directions. But you will need to reapply the customizations to your look and feel.

Make sure you have backups of the database from before you start the upgrade and after each upgrade...that way you have a place to fall back to if something should go wrong. This would include your file structure on the files in the directories as well. I can not stress having backups enough.

Actually, while it's not officially supported any more, Geeklog 1.3.11sr7-1 is still fine to use. So I'd say first make sure you're on that version (anything older has security issues!) and then you can take your time to do an upgrade.
