this FAQ is IMHO outdated. The theme setting is now at lib-common.php and $usetheme variable should name of theme layout path.

Now I see that siteconfig.php is the one where the $_CONF['theme'] = 'theme_name'; should be added.

Even after my config changes, I am getting errors regarding the theme. mainly when I do configuration changes
error look like this:
2 - purepro_sitefooter() [function.purepro-sitefooter]: Unable to access /web/layout/professional/default-layout.php @ /web/layout/purepro/functions.php line 443

any help appreciated
