Thanks Mark
No I am not giving up on Geeklog I like it and the team too much and I am sure the solution is simple, perhaps more than we think.
The guy who his in touch with Google technical says the problem of the trawling is the multiple articles on a page - so we are going to try at the weekend to hack an installation where one article is placed on a page and that the title goes to the head of the browser and the first couple of lines in a Meta at the head.
It will of course mean a massive rewrite (well that is what I am told) and I may not be able to upgrade so easy.
I will make a longer reply tomorrow as it\'s almost 2 am and I have to be back online by 6 am to start posting news again.
Thanks for the comment on the site appreciated it\'s had almost 2 million hits since early this year and it sister site news.balita.ph almost 750,000.

Well, excuse me for trying to help. I never accused you of anything nor did I ever say it was a CSS problem. Since what I posted went way over your head and you jumped on me for no good reason, I\'ll back out so you can resume going around in circles. Maybe the other Mark will help you find a way out. You can take your frustrations out on him instead. Bye.
Just so we\'re sure, I\'m not the same Mark that replied to you that time - funny how we\'re both posting in the same thread here. :-)
Funny, how millions in the world also have the same name. All because you didn\'t trademark it.

Waooh! What an arrogrant statement. I thought I was the only one irritated by your arrogance under another topic.
There is a different between helping others and treating others as stupid.

I've done some research tonight as to how to improve Google listings on your site. I know this has nothing to do with the news problem, but who know it may.
Google does not like certain HTML characteristics and long urls with all sorts of &=? in it. One other thing that could help is a META tag that has instructions for the googlebot not to index the main page, but index all others... something like
on your front page and
This site has more info on it as well.

I've found a site that will validate your HTML code, and I've run it against this site and it doesn't comply 100%, but I doubt any site does.
Here's the URL
http://validator.w3.org/
Is there a URL rewrite available, hack or other wise for Geeklog. I know you can pick up some server side ones, but they cost a fortune.
Of course, none of this info may help with the news, but it may. I just thought it may be relevant.

No need to convince me of anything - valid (X)HTML and CSS as well as accessibility and useability are things that I care about a lot. Geeklog in its current incarnation is lacking here in several areas but there isn\'t much we can do about it without major rewrites of some portions of the code. Hence Geeklog 2 ...

Oh, right on, Dirk. I wasn\'t too sure if you had time to follow all the various threads around here, but apparently you\'re pretty diligent.
Please don\'t take offense to my previous statements re: compliance; frankly, I think you and the rest of the Geeklog team are among the best coders I\'ve ever seen. I\'ve had a lot of fun tinkering with my installation, just seeing how well the internal code is laid out has been a pleasure.
If you ever need a hand troubleshooting validation bugs for Geeklog 2.0, or if you can think of anything else for me to do, I\'d love to be of service. I\'m pretty competent at CSS, PHP, and *nix installations and administration type things.
I also run a small server farm/ISP of OpenBSD boxes with a fast connection that I can throw test installs on if that would help.

I think I know the answer to this one, though I see this is a year late. Google News told me that they would not accept the pages on my site because the filename in the URL begins with the year. For example:
http://www.mysite.com/article.php?story=20040818230713466
They said this had to do with trawling dynamically generated pages, though I don't see that makes a ton of sense. Anyhow, they are successfully trawling and linking to other pages of my site that use other URL formats.
