how to add smilies for free?

After an hour or so of messing about in config files and googling, I still can't work out how to add to the standard 22 smilies without paying for an addon. I put the smilies in the functions.inc file withe the rest of them, pointing to the right gif files, and interestingly the :codes: that I gave them work if typed in manually, but they're not showing up on the Post page with the original 22, so the average user doesn't know they exist. How can I fix this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Do you want smilies just when you view articles right?

Sorry, I should've been more specific. I mean the list of smilies that is available when you post (i.e. the bunch of smilies to the left of the box I'm writing in right now!). SURELY there's a way to do this!? I am appealing to anyone who has any ideas to PLEASE post a solution here. I really really can't afford the USD$20 for glManager or whatever it's called - it's a free community site I'm working on, and it's kind of important to get these extra smilies working.

Cheers!

If you really want to hack the core forum code to do this, check out gf_restoresmilies in forum/include/gf_format.php

How to add smilies for free (yes, I'm Dutch)
tested with forum 2.3.x

Its quite some work so just add a few smilies at a time.

Upload your smilies to: /$PATH/public_html/forum/images/

Edit:

$HOME/public_html/forum/include/gf_format.php
$HOME/public_html/forum/include/include_html.php
$HOME/public_html/forum/print.php
$HOME/geeklog/plugins/forum/functions.inc

Look for green (Mr. Green) in these files and copy the syntax.
Its fairly simple.

Watch out for the ");" in"$HOME/geeklog/plugind/forum/functions.inc" when you copy the line.
Otherwise you'll get a huge SQL error (harmless). So check the syntax.

Have fun!

Or better yet - use glMessenger with the online smilie admin and you will have an integrated PM Module and online smilie admin that works for both the PM and forum posting.

See the datasheet here for more details.

Hi Blaine

I really don't need all the functionality of GLmessenger but just a tool to admin smilies.
Why not strip GLmessenger, call it GLsmilies and offer it for about $8?

That would do it for me and hopefully many others.
