i want to make my geeklog site so that it doesnt take up the whole page. for example, goto:
This Site (Music New Site)

is there an overall table that holds everything else in it? or do i make on that starts on the header.thtml and ends on footer.thtml? does that even make sense?

Depends on the theme. Have a look at the header.thtml and footer.thtml of the theme you're using - any outer tables are defined there.

XSilver, Geeklog's old default theme, did the same thing, btw.
