Style Question- Link Color on left menu

This is probably something very basic to a knowledgeable CSS coder, but my question is:
How can I change the LINK color on the left menu and not anywhere else?

I tried editing the .leftmenu in the header.thtml file, but it doesn't change the link color or decoration. The only way I've been able to do so is to change the style of the entire document. I need white links on the menu and black links on the rest of the page. Can someone help me out here?
