How do I edit my theme?

I am trying to find where I can change the font color and background color on a theme. The documentation is vague at best.

This documentation? It's vague because these things depend on the theme in question. Start with style.css and header.thtml

I am working within the professional theme and I changed the header-bg.png image so that I could have a different color header background. I changed it and nothing happened. I cleared my cache and still nothing. As a matter of fact, I changed it and reloaded the page to see if it changed anything and the the file was reverted back to the original background image. This really sux. In the file blockheader-message.thtml I changed the colors of the headers and stuff and it doesn't change a thing.
I don't understand thtml, why can't they just use html files.

Geeklog doesn't do anything like that (reverting files). There must be another reason for that.

header-bg.png is only referenced from style.css once (and from the message blockheader), so if you remove it from there, it shouldn't show up again. If you don't need a gradient for the background, you could then simply set the background color in the stylesheet.

Like I said, I am working with the "professional" theme. I have been able to change things and it is working alright. I have run into a snag though. I am on the "contribute" page and allot of the text is black. I have changed the background to black so it is kind of hard to read, I am submitting a screenshot with the text in question highlighted and one with the text not highlighted. Any help would be great. I just need to know the section of the style.css that handles that.

Got that problem worked out.
New problem, how do I change the text color on the "add master event" & "My calendar" buttons on the calendar page and the three buttons ("save" "preview" & "cancel"Wink at the bottom of the contribute page.
Also, I now have dotted lines around the dates on my calendar. How do I get rid of them?
