is http header "referrer" mandatory?

within GL, is it mandatory that the "referrer" header be presented by the browser and if so, where can I turn this off? i have a site visited by folks interested in personal privacy and therefore, some block the outbound http referrer header. we're getting complaints, previously thought to be due to bogon IP space, of folks not being able to view the site. we've disabled plugins such as ban and bad behavior 2, neither of which resolved the issue.

is there something on the backend of Gl causing the following:

"An invalid request was received from your browser. This may be caused by a malfunctioning proxy server or browser privacy software."

these users are getting this when trying to view the site, with or without the above mentioned plugins turned on.

That text is in the bad behavior plugin. When you disabled it, did you remember to remove the hook in lib-common.php that you had to put there when you installed bb2?

Thought about that, but didn't remove it.

I will try.

That's kinda a hokey way of doin' things. Needs to be when you disable it in GL, it's disabled period.
