How to put a dollar sign in posts?

I'm working on creating my new site, but I have noticed that when I put a dollar sign in my stories, it (and the characters following it) disappear - I assume that they are being mistaken for a PHP command.
Does anyone know how I can make the dollar sign appear, for example, when quoting a price for something?

use two dollar signs and a space..should work, yes the dollar sign is mistaken for a variable...
