Warning: Too many connections

How can I use persistent connections with GeekLog?
I keep getting this error message:
Warning: Too many connections in /home/httpdocs/geeklog/system/databases/mysql.class.php on line 75
Cannnot connect to DB server
Digging further, I noticed over a 100 open connections!
It says here to use persistent connections:
http://www.mysql.com/doc/T/i/Tips.html
Is this the way to go or should I tweak something else?
Please help.

I got this, too. I've been told it has nothing to do with the number of guest
or logged-in users noted on the site. However, nobody has really addressed
the issue of persistent connections. I'd be interested in answers to your
question.
