Is geeklog's HTML output validated for HTML 4.01?

That depends on the theme.
My own ClearBlue theme (the new version for 1.3.6) is valid, for example, as is Matty's DotCom theme. Others, like the Yahoo theme, are nearly there and only fail validation because of the list.thtml (formatting <ul> with CSS so that it looks good in all browsers turned out to be next to impossible - that's why ClearBlue uses a table here).
Other themes may or may not validate, I haven't tested them all.
In general, this is in the responsibility of the theme author. The HTML that is hard-coded in Geeklog is valid (that was actually my first contribution to the Geeklog project ;-)

I must confess that some of my themes probably aren't all that compliant - I shall attempt to be more well-behaved in the future in this area, though
