renaming stats plugin

I'm attempting to install the stats plugin using a name other than stats for the plugin. The problem is that the domain/stats URL is already aliased on my commercial servers.
As a "simple" hack, I searched and replaced all /stats/ with /my_stats/
I also changed the plugin name in the install.php from stats to my_stats
The folders were all renamed my_stats
I was able to use the install.php to successfully install the stats plugin.
HOWEVER, the admin function DOES NOT show up on the moderation page, and the link to "Visitor Stats" DOES NOT show up under User Functions.
I have searched the functions.inc and I cannot see what is causing the plugin not to be added to the admin stuff or to the user functions.
Any ideas of what may be wrong?

Figured out most of the answer to my own question.
The plugins API requires that certain functions in the functions.inc file contain the name of the plugin as the final part of the function.
For instance:
function plugin_getmenuitems_stats()
becomes
function plugin_getmenuitems_my_stats()
My only remaining issue is that the admin page says the site is not counting statistics and offers the option to start. However, the st_vars capture is set to 1 and the site and stats are being stored in the database.
