installing geeklog 1.37

I had a friend install Geeklog 1.36 for me a few months ago. He's no longer around, but I'd like to update to 1.37. I'm wondering just how exactly the best way to do this is? He used putty to upload the site, but I've got no experience with that(just WS FTP which he said I cant use). So basically, I'd like to know what the best program is, and just a little basic guide as to how to upgrade. Would be much appreciated

Upgrading is very much like a fresh install. You remove all the files, upload the new ones and run the install script (this time selecting "upgrade database" on the first page). More information is available in the installation instruction (which also includes a section on upgrading).

Since you already have Geeklog 1.3.6 running, you can keep some of the directories, so you don't have to go through the chmod steps again. Specifically, you can keep the logs, backups, public_html/backend, public_html/images, and public_html/layout directories.

Also, if you installed any hacks or plugins, you will probably want to keep system/lib-custom.php, system/plugins (but replace system/plugins/staticpages), any plugin-specific directories in public_html, and public_html/admin/plugins (again, replacing public_html/admin/plugins/staticpages and public_html/staticpages).

Hope that helps.

bye, Dirk
