My GL has been working fine for a number of months. I was trying to fix a permissions problem with some article images when I realized I couldn't reach my index.php page any longer. I can get to some other static html and php pages. I've tried setting the permissions on index.php to 777 and it doesn't seem to help. Any ideas would be appreciated. My website is olwig.familynotepad.com. Thanks.

I got it working. I have a Saint of the Day block for my family site that scrapes from the American Catholic page once a day. I didn't realize that site was down. Now I need to figure out how to check if the site is up or not. Thanks, again, GL developers for a great package.

Search www.squatty.com for weather block. He had the same problem when noaa would go down.

Anyone who displays info from another site can experience the exact same thing. If the other site's server is unreachable or they move/rename the file you are using, your webpages containing this foreign data can hang very badly or not display at all. Those who hotlink images or files from another server are suspectible to this too. Squatty has a nice function he wrote where it tries fsockopen first with a timeout. If data is not obtained then it tries fopen. This by itself though will not stop hanging, you have to check whether data was actually obtained before trying to process it. I think the periodic hanging some experience on the weather block is because this little check is missing. He recommends running a cron job like every 30 min for his block as a short-term fix, but I think if the check is added it would alleviate the hanging permanently. Most people who retrieve info from another site don't think about doing this. The problem won't raise its head until the other site or the connection between you two has problems. It's nice to see the author of the article here is considerate of the other site by using a cache.
