I think this should pointed out in the "install" doc, that "backups/" should not be readable to other user than webuser.
A "chmod -R 770 backups/" should be ok, provided that the directory belongs to webuser.

Okay, but if you do that, you may have problems getting to your backup files (for making backups of them, for example), when you log into your site via SSH. Depends on your server setup, of course ...

Geeklog is being used by many people who don't run their own servers. Changing the backup directory to 770 will prevent writing to it on most shared hosts.
