Nothing seems to work

I recently installed geeklog. I had some problems getting the index page to come up, but I resolved that problem. But I can't do anything. I can't post stories, I can't create new users, I can't change the passwords of the existing accounts....about the only thing I can do it log in as Admin. I've searched up and down, and all over this site, tried everything that was offered, checked all my settings, but nothing seems to work. I'm stumped. Anyone have a problem like this?

Make sure you have register_globals=on in your php.ini bye, Dirk

I THOUGHT my register_globals=off, and everything seemed to work just fine. However, my host must have turned them on while I was troublehsooting with them this weekend. This is a huge security risk, as I understand it. IS GL2 going to work with these turned off? For one of my sites (which is on a different server), I had to do some fancy footwork with some of the code to get stuff to work with them turned off, as the host insisted I keep them off. What is your stance on this?

Having register_globals=on is not a security risk per se. It requires more care when writing code, though. Of the security issues we had with Geeklog so far, none was caused by having register_globals=on.

Actually, we have been through this discussion a couple of times, both here on the site and on the mailing lists ...

And, yes, Geeklog 2 is being written from the ground up to work with register_globals=off.

bye, Dirk

So what happens when you try to, say, post a new story? Also, a URL may help ... bye, Dirk

Okay, when I try to post a new story, I enter in a title, and the body, and all that good junk, and when I hit submit, it goes to the page that lists all the stories available (this is when I'm an admin). But the new story is not listed. The only listed story is the default story about how to log in. I try to edit that story, but the changes won't save. I can't delete that story either. It's almost like the database isn't being updated. Anyway, the link is www.jaggedmetalkrustyo.net/index.php You have to type in the '/index.php', since I have an alternate 'index.html', so no one can see the default story and know what the passwords are. Though, I could just manually update it via the db..... Thanks for the help.

Interesting. What you describe is normally a sure sign that register_globals is "off". On closer inspection, though, it looks like only POST requests are not working on your site, but GET requests are. I have to take a bit of a guess here, but what do you have in your variables_order setting in php.ini? It should be variables_order = "GPCS" Especially check for the existance of the 'P' ... bye, Dirk

the "GPCS' was there, along with an "E" at the beginning. I tried removing the E, but it didn't help. I went through the php.ini file, and nothing jumped out at me. I'm so stumped.

Well, I'm running out of ideas, too. You could try replacing your php.ini with the php.ini-recommended file that comes with PHP (turning on register_globals in that file first, of course) and see if that makes any difference. bye, Dirk

I tried it, but to no avail. I'll look around a bit more, but if you're out of ideas, and I'm out of ideas, then I guess it just wasn't meant to be.....

I installed GeekLog on a local wAMP enviroment and it worked perfectly. After transfering the data to one of my providers the login didn't work. Using the .htaccess I activated register_globals to on and the check.php reported that all the settings are correct. I think I found the problem : The variabels_order is set to EPGCS and all the POST vars were empty ! Is there a patch for this... or do I have to bother my hosting company ? Regards, Alexander Dorn

I have been having the same problems--can't change passwords or other user information, cant add/delete/edit stories. I've been through all the related posts to no avail. php.ini has register_globals set to On, variable_order is set to EGPCS. I have a totally nonfunctional site and I'm not sure what to do at this point since everythings seems to be set up correctly. the site is HERE
