Yet another website got geeked and this time, it's one of my own: The MacOS X FAQ has moved to Geeklog after running as a static site for just over one year. So if you are interested in MacOS X (and can read German!) - hop over and pay the site a visit.

bye, Dirk

P.S. And, yes, I will be making that theme available for download eventually. It is, however, already optimized for the next version of Geeklog and will need some "downgrading" to work with 1.3.5. Watch this space for further annoucements ...

Since "Got Geeked" was meant to be more than just an announcement section, I should at least try and give you some more information, shouldn't I? Okay, here we go ...

So why did you not use Geeklog when you started the site? Well, simply because I didn't know that it existed. And I can tell you, it would have prevented me form re-inventing the wheel a couple of times. As the number or articles on the site grew, I found myself adding a search function (and replacing it with another one after a while, when it turned out that it didn't work too well). I also added a crude comments script rather late in the site's life.

Did it take long to convert the site to Geeklog? No, it didn't. All in all, it took me only three days: One to make the theme, one to move the articles over (basically just copy and paste) and another for fixing links and preparing the switching over (including creating a long .htaccess file so that the old URLs are correctly redirected).

Was it worth it? How can I really tell after less than two hours? But I feel that it was worth it. Recently, I found it hard to find the motivation to go and write a new story for the site. Filling an article into an HTML template wasn't that much work really, but upgrading links, index files and trying not to forget to update the search index, too, was just tedious. From now on, this is all done for me by Geeklog and I can concentrate on writing the actual article. And, last not least, I also hope that the users of the site are now more motivated to send in stories of their own.

bye, Dirk

Hi Dirk, I can't read German but I can make enough out to navigate the site Wink It's a very nice clean looking site and looks very professional. Now, if only I had a MAC and could speak German.... I'd visit more. Cheers, Blaine

Every time we release a new Geeklog version, I'm picking one of my own sites as a testbed. And this time it happened to be the MacOS X FAQ which was stuck with Geeklog 1.3.9(!), carefully patched against all security issues, but without any spam protection(!).

But that's all a thing of the past now, since the site is now running on Geeklog 1.4.1rc1 and Forum 2.6rc2. And it got a brand new theme on top of that. Now I "only" need to reanimate the site's community ...

Ohh I donno Dirk, looks like your forum section is doing good for postings. hasn't been a front line posting for the contribute since 2005, but I'm sure that'll change fast enough.
