RDF & other offsite data

My geeklog (1.3.7sr2) seems to have a significant issue with accessing data from offsite (RDF feeds in particular, though I also had issues when I poked the weather block up). For some reason, from within PHP/geeklog I don\'t seem to be able to access the feeds, and get the default text up instead. Using lynx off the same box seems to work, even when running as the www-data user. I\'m sure this is some simple PHP fix that I don\'t know about. Anyone help me out? Thanks! -- Charlie

Not sure what you mean by \"default text\". Can you give an example? There\'s a bug in 1.3.7sr2 that displays new portal blocks only to the next visitor of the site. So when you create a new portal block, be sure to do a \"forced\" reload in your browser (this is fixed in 1.3.8). Would that explain your problem? bye, Dirk

When trying to contact: http://www.bbc.co.uk/syndication/feeds/news/ukfs_news/front_page/rss091.xml in a portal block, I get the following in the \'normal\' block section under block admin: GeekLog can not reach the supplied RDF file at 2003-07-01 09:49:25. Please double check the URL provided. Make sure your url is correctly entered and it begins with http://. GeekLog will try in one hour to fetch the file again. As a second attempt, the server still seems unable to access the feed (latest RDF feed is currently listed as 45 minutes ago). Doesn\'t seem to be the bug that you mentioned; I\'ve tried forced reloads and other people looking at the block to no avail. And I am /seeing/ the portal, just not the actual feed.

Well, that usually means exactly that - Geeklog tried to read that feed but couldn't. There's no secret trick (or bug that I know of) involved - some feeds are a bit unreliable ...

I just tried it here (locally, running 1.3.8rc1) and it worked for me on the first attempt.

bye, Dirk

I have a feed from amazon that sometimes doesn\'t work. I was told by the host, it is some php bug. I didn\'t bother digging deeper. Mainly, I\'m not sure they are telling the truth.

Yeah. I really think it\'s a PHP wierdness of some kind, but I\'m not a great PHP programmer. What\'s wierd is that the link works in lynx, immediately, every time -- but this and the weather block both fail. (The weather block gives an error that\'s a little more definitive, in that it gives: php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Temporary failure in name resolution. This occurs even for an IP address, which seems wierd to me. Thanks for the advice and help; I\'ll dig into other feeds, etc

(And replying to my own post) It\'s definitely name resolution inside PHP. I\'d gotten sidetracked by having used the IP elsewhere and got a failure. Here as soon as I use the IP, it all works. Sorry to waste people\'s time. Razz
