This is something that I needed, and others might too. I've coded the 5 line hack, and would be glad to contribute it, if the GL team is interested. The extension would allow a plugin to define a function that would be called when a user logs in, or returns to the site (after their session cookie has expired). The ways to use this are many. This could be used (as I am) to allow a way to force password changes. It could also be used to present a 'Terms of the site' agreement, that must be agreed to before having access. Etc, etc.... I guess you're looking for PLG_loginUser and PLG_logoutUser. See the comments in system/lib-plugins.php for details.
