Confused about paths / ftp\'ing

I don\'t have shell access to my server, unfortunately, so I\'m trying to follow the install instructions using ftp.
I downloaded, and un-packed the files to my PC using winRar. I then ftp\'d all the files to a folder I created in my server root (/Geeklog). However, the instal instructions say to unpack ALL the files into your *webtree*, but in another part say put the stuff in the public_html in your public_html/www/etc folder (its public_html in my case), and the other outside of this folder (i.e. in the folder I created in my root?).
I\'m confused - am I misunderstanding the term Webtree? Can anyone help?
I\'m sorry if I\'ve missed somethin really obvious I have tried to work this out myself - honest!
Many thanks

I just always unpack everything to a non web folder then copy
everything from public_html into a web accessible folder.
Then I got into config.php and set $_conf[\'path\'] and then $_conf[\'path_html\'] to point to these two directories....
$_conf[\'path\'] should point to the non web folder
and
$_conf[\'path_html\'] should point to your web accessible folder
