Is there a hack or has anyone done this? I want to have the users/writers photo displayed instead of the sections icon when one posts a story.

There's a variable, {contributedby_photo}, that you can use in the story templates. It will hold the submitter's photo (i.e. the img tag), if there is one (and is empty otherwise).
