Has anyone had spammers able to grab email addresses off of your GL site? Reason I ask is that I just got spam to an address that I believe is only in one location. And that is the email address set up for Root and in my config.php file.

That should not be possible from within Geeklog itself.
The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.

How irregular is your e-mail address? Many spammers now send spaml to random e-mail address names, looking for addresses that don't bounce back.

Did you start recieving lots of spam? or did you gjust get a single piece of mail?
