Questions w/ changing host

Hi. Currently I am changing my hosts, from a Win2K server to a linux server, so that I can utilize some options such as the gallery integration that I couldn't with Win2K.

I am currently running Geeklog 1.3.8-1, so I figure this would be the time to go to 1.3.8-1sr3. I have a couple questions on how I should go about transferring my site.

Should I perform a fresh install of 1.3.8-1sr3 on the new server and just copy over the database? Or would it be easier to just copy over the whole site and perform just the upgrade?

Also- I have made a few modifications to the user registration (added the ability to enter password and save it in the DCool - were there any major changes to that file or can I just use the old one?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

I'm in the midst of doing the same thing. I just copied over the DB and did then uploaded a fresh copy of 1.3.8-1sr3 and ran the install script. Everything seems to be working fine.

I hated the win2k servers. I'm glad to be back on linux.

Yeah, you should move, then upgrade, or upgrade, then move. Don;t do a fresh install and then move the old database. That might not work.

Ok - well I opted to just to transfer everything over to the new host and upgrade from there. Thanks for the help.

I have another quick question. Since I am new to *nix, what permissions should I set on my folders? As it is right now, someone can type in one of my folders and it will list all the files. If I password protect my geeklog admin folder, will that cause problems with the site? I've seen the .hta access ability and wonder if that is the way I should do it.

Yeah, use a .htaccess file.

In your top-level html directory, create a .htaccess file with the following line:

Options -indexes

That will make it so that people can't list the contents of directories.

Great - thanks for your help. One more question. The domain transfer has taken place - now when I try to pull up, for example - a .jpg file directly by typing in the URL - it wont pull it up. My partner is flipping out b/c he has some car ads on ebay and the images arent pulling up. Is this a permission issue w/ linux? I apologize im so new to this all.
Here is an example of one of the ads:

Well, when I go to http://www.denverunderground.com/auto/ I don't even see the 99civic folder. Check to make sure it is actually there. If it is, it may be a permissions problem.

Im sorry I gave you an old ad! Here is a current one and the folder is on the site.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=6021&item=2453310529

Notice that you can go to www.denverunderground.com/auto/00jetta2/ and see the files and click on the pictures and they pull up. Thanks again!

Oh my - nevermind! I figured it out. Guess Linux is case-sensitive. the files were name with the .JPG instead of .jpg, would be easy to correct but ebay doesnt let you make changes to an active ad. this is gonna be fun Smile

Don't change the ad. Instead, rename the file.
