I was thinking of creating a high school alumni site. If you have any ideas of great plugins or just about anything that would make it good please let me know.

I was looking at using Geeklog for an alumni site some time ago. It should be possible to make a good community site with what Geeklog has:

1) forum plugin
2) contacts plugin - allow people to add their own contact details? Probably better to use the extended user information page, so that people have better control over their information and privacy.
3) gallery
4) calendar for events etc.

Then just make it so that everyone has to register to do anything, and check you only allow alumni in.

For these kinds of things, the most difficult bit is making it simple enough for everyone. Sometimes Geeklog appears too complicated to non-computer literate users. Too many options. Try to cut out anything you don't need by simplifying the themes perhaps.
