I posted this as a story rather than in the forum at first--oops and sorry to whomever that causes inconvenience for.

I finally did it--solve my "Backup Filesize was 0 bytes" problem. All this time i've been unable to do backups and thought it was a path prob but obviously it couldn't be cuz that would give a different error, atleast on apache, dunno about IIS.
here it is: all my sites use gl_ as the table prefix, except on the one that i couldn't do the backups on. I changed the prefix back to the default gl_ and all is well. backups working great!
hope this helps

well, i made all the changes in the database itself.
changed all the "geekl_" table prefixes back to "gl_" which is what GL originally uses as long as you don't change it in the config.php like i did. Oops!

of course, if you never changed your table prefixes in the first place, then this won't help you cuz all prefixes should still be "gl_".

remember to make sure that whatever table prefix you use in the database is the same one that you declare in config.php at $_DB_table_prefix = 'gl_';

sorry folks, turns out that i'm an idiot and as usual, premature Oops!
turns out that i didn't get the backup to work. what i thought was a working backup was just a copy of a backup made from another GL site that i used to change my table names. Because it was in the backups dir, GL backup utility considered that it was the one that was just made. I was fooled by my own ignorance.
My apologies for wasting your time. ...and the table prefix has absolutely nothing to do with whether the backup works or not.
sorry
