make my shoutbox support with smiley?

hi all,
i'm a newbie on php. i try to make some script such as shoutbox.
i make smiley.php like this :

$smiley['sad.gif'] = '
';
$smiley['happy.gif'] = '';
....
.... etc ?>
i want if the visitor type, my blogger will show happy.gif on viewshout.php
plz help me. thx.
