Hey Guys, I love geeklog. Thanks to the community for developing such a cool tool.
I have a couple quick questions. I've been thinking about a couple of these for a while and figure I could probably get some help from the community to save me some time reverse-engineering.
1. What is the plugin that allows private messages?
2. Is it possible, with the forum plugin, to only get notification if someone replies to your post, and not to every post? (Last time I said "notify me" I got tons and tons of emails and they didn't have the body of the message in them.) ((is it possible to modify the plugin to post the body of the mesage in the notification?))
3. Is it possible to do mass subscriptions of users? I've been looking at this and it seems that I can add a bunch of new users all at once to the gl_users table, but if I want them to be split up into 4 different new groups, how do I then modify the group permissions? How does the group permissions work? I don't understand the gl_group_assignments table. Do I need to edit that for every new user, or again, can I do it after the fact?
Any leads on these questions would be a great help? I've currently gotten the go ahead from the head of student activities, as well as the ITS department at my school to install Geeklog and modify it to be used as a community portal system for the Inter Club Council and Associated Students organizations at my school, for communication purposes. It's really exciting and lots of people are incredibly stoked on the project.
Currently, I'm the only developer on the project and I've managed to work within a high security environment such as working with php-cgiwrap and register-globals off. I've checked the whole thing into cvs and I hope to be able to offer some of my code back upstream soon, as well as offer some plugins as they get developed. I'm also recruiting some PHP hackers from school, so soon, there will be a small developer base at my school working on this project. Very exciting.
I can't send the link to the site yet, since it's not ready to be released, but I"m excited to share with the community all of our hacks as soon as we can.
Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
Andrew

See, it's been about 2 hours since I wrote that last post and the post is already about scroll off the homepage. I wonder if we could make some email to forum plugin that will allow people to reply to forum posts right from their email and update the site. Maybe using an alias and some procmail rules, this would be possible.

I believe that was a bug that Blaine has since corrected.

Okay, I see the batch import function. I never noticed that before. That should work nicely. But after that how do I configure the groups? Do you know how the gl_group_assignment table works?

For the private messenger plugin -- you want glMessenger. You can view the datasheet on it at www.portalparts.com

Eeek! Did you know that glMessenger costs $20? I didn't. That's a drag. Wasn't it just free like a month ago? What about free for use for non-profits? ee-gad. That puts a wrench in the works. What abouut upgrades. What if I buy it and it doesn't work, or breaks with my implimentation of geeklog. If I fix it, am I supposed to submit the fix back upstream? Why should I? Am I getting paid? hmmm. Geez, that's a drag. Are more developer's starting to charge for geeklog plugins? I hope this isn't a new trend. Just to broach this topic, very loosely, and briefly, I am of the mindset that the money is to be made in the services and custom code. Recurring licensing is bad news.
