hopefully i've read deep enough into the login probs archive to not embarress myself here:

i am able to login as admin, but not as any other user. i've tried it on opera, ie, firefox, enabled all cookies, cleared cookie & cache history, set $_CONF['cookiedomain'] to a real domain... so i'm stumped as to what else it could be.

this problem was solved by adding some user functionality to any of the users besides admin. none were activated as story admins, for instance, and it caused the weird login. horray for me!
