I am writing a standalone script that will modify stories in the geeklog database, automatically changing the topic ID, featured bit, and show on frontpage bit when an article reaches a certain age.

Question: once the script has modified the database, what needs to be done to make those changes visible? For instance, it would need to run functions to update the RSS file and update the stories shown on the front page. What functions should it run? What other tasks need to be done?
