Redirects instead of standard links, why?

Seeking a little understanding - being that I'm a webmaster who made the mistake of submitting a site of mine to a geeklog portal and now find that the geeklog link/redirect has replaced my index page in Google.

I realize there are advantages to this method of linking in terms of page rank and such for the geeklog user....however, for those who are unwitting... it's more or less a form or hijacking - and in this case has resulted in a loss of a number one position at google. Now, I know that all I need to do to remedy this is to simply submit a few competitors' sites to a geeklog links page and all will be well in a few weeks. However, I'm just not that sort.

So, folks...why not plain jain links instead of redirects? What was the reasoning?

So you can learn what your users are most interested in and find what people who visit your site are mostly looking for. Ultimately can help a ton to improve your site. This is really to showcase geeklog's ability to generate helpful stats. Click 'site states' at the top(and scroll down) to see what site geeklog.net users like to visit.

I understand, and have looked at the stats - however, eventually...there won't be many stats because the SEO/webpromo community will start avoiding geeklog sites like the plague. There must be a way of gathering the same stats using a slightly different technique....

Most sites (including Geeklog sites) would probably like their index page listed in Google. I realise it's a 50/50 proposition at the moment, probably depending on a few other factors...whether the geeklog site gets listed or the submitting site gets listed.

I would actually consider this a good thing then

Nope. When someone clicks on a link, the browser goes directly to that linked site. There's no trace left of that click in the originating server's logs. There may be other ways to implement the same thing, but they will always need some sort of indirection (or, worse, client-side scripting like JavaScript *shudder*).

bye, Dirk
