upgrade from .8 to .9 problems

Ok.. I tried and continued to try and now it's 7:30 am and I can't hang any longer.
I got the errors after choosing upgrade, path to geek and then choosing 1.8 just like the docs said I could get
1050: Table 'gl_access' already exists
so i started everything over (droped the db and tried to restore the backup).
my backup gave me geek.gz which was 12 megs. i got it to the flat text file through shell and it's like 300 megs. i think it's the visitors stats that's killing me.
Anyways, i delelted the geek directory and public_html and copied the originals over. I ran this command in shell to try the restore
mysql spaz_geek
1146: Table 'spaz_geek.gl_vars' doesn't exist
What do I do know?
Thanks

also,
I was thinking that maybe while the restor was cranking, people were definately hitting the site. would that have messed up the restore?
thanks again

I would generally recommend to disable the site while upgrading it or restoring it from a backup. What I usually do is to temporarily remove or rename the lib-common.php and replacing index.php with a file that says something like "Site down for maintenance".
It's also possible that you ran into timeouts during the restore. That SQL file you have there seems to be huge - on most shared hosting sites you will have a hard time restoring such a huge file. That would explain why, for example, the gl_vars table was missing.
Are you sure you selected the upgrade option on your original upgrade attempt? Because "Table 'gl_access' already exists" is a typical message you would get when trying to run the install script (in install mode) on an existing database.
From what I can tell, nothing is lost. You only have to somehow restore that backup and run the install script - in upgrade mode - again.
bye, Dirk

Thanks Dirk,
I was able to get everything back up to par. Then I turned off vis. stats and cleared whiped out all the data so now the db is down to a meg or so.
When I did wake up today, I attempted to do everything from scratch, following the upgrade docs step by step. I made a backup of the geek and pub_html directory, uploaded the .9 files and tried to install upgrade again. and I still got the same error.
1050: Table 'gl_access' already exists
Now I'm stuck with this:
1146: Table 'spazzed_geek.gl_sessions' doesn't exist
I go to look at the tables and of course - nothing is there. I'm now restoring the original 300MB database.
The box I'm on is one of my dedicated. So i'm wondering, can I do this..
- Install on a clean domain and with a brand new database,
- Once version .9 is up and running, import my old database
- Copy my themes
- Install all the plugins again
I'd like to try to do the upgrade again but waiting 30 minutes each time to restore the datbase is killing me.
Thanks!
