Stuck at step 1 at installation

When I try to install clicking the next button just seems to reload step 1. I searched the install forum and found that it could be a problem with register_globals, but this is not the case since it is on in my PHP-config. I even checked it. No errors are given or to be found in log files
I'm using PHP5 with mysql and mysqli extensions loaded. PHPMyAdmin succesfully created an empty database so I'm assuming that that is all working fine.
When I installed it last time I got it working in one go but this time I seem to be running into walls. Maybe I should go back to PHP4?

Returning to PHP4 did the trick for me.
