here is the problem: i've created a staticpage with php enabled. in it i've put a form that posts to $PHP_SELF.
I go to the page, no problem. I submit the form, and i get the dreaded "access denied" message.
thought it was $PHP_SELF so i changed that to the actual page addy, and viola, it worked. but I dunno why.
Any ideas?

I'm still in shock that i asked this question. anyways, to get the proper self-type of address i used request_uri or script_name, both give me the extra "?page=pageid" that php_self doesn't do. Better than hardcoding the url because now it can be used as a centerblock on the main page without fear of the form being posted to another page.
thanks for not telling me to RTFM.
