How to Install Geeklog.

I have prepared a detailed step-by-step tutorial for beginners. It’s online at

http://www.edplans.com/tech/computers/geeklogInstall.php

My first GL installation failed, and the second, and…so I took lots of notes, trying not to repeat mistakes. When it finally succeeded I had a stack of notes which morphed into this tutorial. Please email me suggestions/corrections and I’ll keep updating it.

perhaps you should involve yourself in this effort..

oh, and in step one you suggest that SSH is necessary--it's not actually. Preferred maybe, but not necessary.

Good point. I just added:

"Geeklog can be installed with Telnet, but the more secure SSH is preferred."

You wrote:
You must be able to access the server by FTP and by SSH.

Make that "by FTP or by SSH". It's perfectly possible to install Geeklog if you only have ftp access.

Changed to read:

"Incidentally, Geeklog can be installed with Telnet,
but the more secure SSH is preferred. (In fact, it can be installed without SSH or Telnet...using just FTP. Perhaps we'll add this to the tutorial after we've done it a couple of times.)"

Thanks, Dirk

Might I suggest that you add this to the documentation wiki for geeklog.

wiki.geeklog.net

or at the very least go there and add a link to it.

Dave, are there plans for a tutorial on how to do a new theme? That would be a great Christmas present for us newbies who are struggling with how to work with Geeklog. Smile

You could start with the existing documentation ...

Dirk, and please don't take offense, but the existing documentation hasn't been much help to me ... a big non-geek! It would just be so great if there were step-by-step tutorials on how to make a new theme/skin ... for those of us that can't make any sense of the documentation provided.
