Running Geeklog "offline"
Okay....a couple of things.
1. I love GEEKLOG!! This is much better then some other PHP software I was using. I love the format & ease of use! Thanks!
2. I'm going camping this weekend & I'm taking the laptop (Okay...I'm a true geek!). I want to do some editing of my domain while I'm camping & was wondering if there is a way to do this all offline. I d/l'd the sub-folder that Geeklog was installed in & when I try to run it offline through IE it doesn't know how to read the index.php file.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!!
Thanx again for everything!! I look forward to being a regular here!

I think the problem is not GeekLog, but the PHP ... To work OffLine, like all PHP Sites, you have to download a local web server (ex. Apache), a MySql program to manage the database with PHPMyAdmin and the PHP programs (php.net) ... You have to configure GeekLog for the localhost use in the config.php file...
I think it's not simple, but maybe there is other ways...

RickW...you're right! I probably should just enjoy the camping but according to the weather forecast it's supposed to rain all weekend So I may be stuck in the trailer the whole time. But I may leave technology back at the house. My wife may FORCE me to, too!
BUT...if she doesn't....I may geek out.
I may have to look into what you said, Kreative, about a local web server. But if it's not simple....I'll forgo it & just get my ideas on paper or what not & work on them when I get home on Sunday.
Thanx for the quick reply you guys! I didn't expect it that fast! I love this forum already!!

Well.....Aeonserv is rather "complex" for the lack of a better term. More then I was actually expecting. I'm having problems setting it up to run offline. I have a message in their forum requesting some guidance but no help as of yet. Will continue reading up on it & plugging away.
Anyone else have any suggestions I can try?
Thanx!

Aeonserv installs like a charm too. The trick is to enter the correct info during the install. I did the install a bunch of times before I realized what I was doing wrong.
If you want to use it as a test bed you can copy your files into a new directory inside the main directory created during your Aeonserv install. Import your database and add the default user using phpmyadmin. Then modify your config.php file to point to the correct directory and database.
You will also need to modify your Apache Server Configuration as follows:
Modify line 228:DocumentRoot- to point to your new directory.
Modify line 253:Directory- to point to your new directory.
Modify line(s) 987&995:Require User- to the database user name you created when you imported your database.
Once done all you have to do is modify your hosts file to point your domain to your local host or ip address and your good to go.
It's just that simple.
It will take longer than a few minutes to get up and running but once complete evertyhing fuctions just fine. Take some time to research the Aeonserv message boards and you should find all the info you need.

I agree Aeonserv is a breeze if you are starting from scratch. It installs a functioning gl with many of the most popular plugins.
However, it is a little tricky if you want to migrate an existing gl and database to a laptop (or desktop) for use as a test bed...which I thought was cowski's question. If you want your test bed to function the same as your live site you have to replicate your server environment and config Aeonserv appropriately.
Once done you can test plugins and upgrades on your test bed prior to going live with them.
