One thing I haven't figured out
with GL yet is how to create a postable newswire
as a block on the right hand side - not a center feature. Is that easy to create or is there a plug in? thanks again

Not sure what you mean by "newswire". Could rephrase that, please?

By a newswire, I'm referring to a right hand column in which users (any user) can post a news article. Check out www.nerage.org or www.indymedia.org for an example.

Hmm, so there's a link that opens up a submission form - just like Geeklog does ...

Or were you asking how to get that link in a block? Simply create a "normal" block and put the HTML in it, with a link to submit.php

Putting the link to submit.php is not the problem. The question is whether or not a hypertext link yo the article with the "article title/author" can be catalogued on the right block, like indymedia???

Hacking Geeklog.
make a copy of lib-common.php
inside lib-common.php you will find the code for "Whats New"
copy all the code for "whats New" into custom.lib.php
Edit the Title from Whats new to RightColumThing" (use your own title)

2 Possible ways to do this
1. Edit the Links Section for Link Catagory = 'Thecatagory you call the user submitted items"
Or
Edit the Whats New Portion to be only The User Submited items

Take a look at the Admin Moderation Block for some ideas of you want to bypass security and allow any user to post anything. (not a good idea)

Either way you will have to do some coding.

I still don't quite get the idea, but it sounds like you want to create a new block. So instead of hacking lib-common.php, you should add your code to lib-custom.php and then create a new "PHP block" that calls your function.
