Sorry for this question but did you follow the install instruction carefully?
I installed this plugin within 3 min. You can add a fortune if you like HERE

After copying all files and dirs into appropriate directories you gotta log in as an admin and run this

ok guys, that have been following this post and having my same issues search your fortune directory i have noticed for my other plug-ins i have an install.php and for this particular fortune plug-in that was modified i do not, anybody else notice this? is this the culprit? was it left out of the tar-ball, would another install.php work in it's place?

no, any install.php will absolutely not work. and you don't need the install.php because all the install logic is written into a class anyway. install-class.php or something like that.

it would be helpful if you log file gave you a bit more info.. maybe something like "sql in question:...", or an error number, or anything else than what it is attempting to do. does it?
You can always modify the install-class.php ever so slightly so that the error will be a bit more explanitory.
for example, find
Text Formatted Code
COM_errorLog("Attempting to create table fortune for Fortune plugin", 1);

and change to
Text Formatted Code
COM_errorLog("Attempting to create table fortune for Fortune plugin", 0);

and so on for the other calls to COM_errorLog().

You will still have a sql error, but now you will know a bit more about what that error actually is--hopefully.
report back.

My guess is that your server is running a version of mySQL that doesn't support some bit of the syntax being used. but on the other hand, that shouldn't be cuz this plugin was written a while back when GL 1.3.7 was in fashion.
