creating my own topic icons

So I am trying to use my own topic icons. They are 50 x 50 gifs that I have uploaded into layout/clean/images/icons/ but when I then fill in the icon info in my topics interface--nothing. If I choose one of the default geeklog icons (like "poll.gif") it works fine, but when I use one of mine (like "vermont.gif") I get bupkiss. Can anyone help?

You have to upload them to /public_html/images/topics/some.gif directory.
This is the place where the default topic icons are located.
