hi,
im trying to install the forum plugin ver 2.3, but im having trouble getting it to even show up in the plugins page of geeklog. I uploaded the files because i cant un-tar since i only ahve access to cpanel.
i uploaded the uncompressed folder to the plugins box - does not show up.
i made the public_html files in the geeklog dir and still nothing
even apache is nt showing anything, like my files arent even there, but it shows up on ftp
anyone got a simmilar problem? is there another forum that i can use? i have sucessfully installed a forum on geeklog about a year ago but i forgot the name, it was way easier than this one

couple of things...
First of all in Cpanel, you should have a file manager. If you do, then you can ftp the tar into the right directory and then when you click on the tar (in the file manager) you will have the option (on the right) to extract (un-tar).
Second, there is a bit to the install, make sure that you read the readme file in the tar base directory

If you installed a forum plugin (as upposed to a standalone application) for Geeklog then it was the same. The install proceedure for the forum plugin is the same as other plugins. There is only one forum plugin.
If the plugin does not appear in the plugin editor as an option to install then there are two possible reasons.
1) The files are not in the correct location
2) Your running PHP5
For more information on how to install a plugin. Refer to this page in the documentation project Wiki.
If your running PHP5 - check the FAQ here on this site.

hi thanks for the post, i re-installed geeklog and re-did the forum plugin.
i uploaded the compressed forum folder and used cpanel's file manager to uncompress it in the /plugins folder.
result was a folder named forum was created and i followed the instructions step by step making public_html and the othr folders inside it.
it seems logical to put the forum folder inside /admin because thats where geeklog is getting staticpages. so i did that as well and nothing at all. nothing. i tried to access it directly with URL: http://www.ricedanime.com/v2/admin/plugins/forum/admin but i get a internal server error.
i dunno why but around 1 1/2 yrs ago i was able to do it on my gaming site, maybe i just got dumber???
my php version is 4.3.8
anyone need a quick $5? lol install this forum for me

I think you are still copying to the wrong folder structure.
You the path would be http://www.ricedanime.com/v2/admin/plugins/forum/install.php
There is not yet another level of directory. You are already under the admin related files - then plugins (for plugin specific files).
Have a look at the link I referred you to for additional documentation. It includes pictures.

yes blaine i think i understand what your saying now, the pieces went together when you showed me what it should have been.
the admin folder that was inside the zip file was supposed to go to /admin/forum and it finally showed up in my geeklog's plugins folder.
I got it installed properly, thanks alot for the help jonc and Blaine
My problem was i took the install readme file literally and created a public_html folder inside the geeklog path
because it said
so basically i had http://ricedanime.com/v2/public_html ;/
lol
I was getting a 500 internal server error because of permissions, thank goodness for error logs or else i wouldnt have known. Anyways im trying to figure out the optimal permission right now not sure if its 700 or 755, still playin around with it

You will need to first create the:
geeklog_dir/public_html/forum directory
