I'm new to gl so you might get a small flood of questions from me over the next few weeks, but for now what I would like to be able to do is to have a menu on the side that has links to both news/story type pages as well as static pages. thanks for the help.

the easiest solution is to create a "normal" block from the "admin only" menu.

Simply create a new block, select "normal" block.

In the normal block dialogue area, type in the links that you want to include (you will forfeit the Topic article count).

Select where you would like this block to be (left / right, priority (lower number=higher up)).

Then disable the regular topic block.

The Menu plugin may be another option.
