When I try to register as a new user everything looks fine on the web page but in the logs/error.log I see something like:

Validation failed for "xyz.com "" code=0 mode=return level=notice prefix="" info=""]

I've looked through other posts and have seen Dirk ask if emailing a story works. It does, but I have no idea what that means either.

Could someone give me a hint where to begin tracking down this problem?

Does your site name, i.e. $_CONF['site_name'], include a dot? If so, try changing it to something else.
