I've looked and searched the forum.

There isn't any integrated banner ad plug-in for Geeklog?

Something that would keep track of dates for running the ads and count the number of exposures/clicks for each seems like it would be quite popular and useful.

Have I missed seeing where this is located to download, or are there just not that many developers creating plug-ins for GL and it does not exist yet?

I have just installed Adblock. Does that tell you something?

Do a forum search for "banner" to see what other people are using for banner management.

That tells me you don't like viewing banner ads when you surf the web. How does that affect what features others would find useful in Geeklog?

A few people mentioned phpAdsNew which I have used. But frankly, that is overkill for any of my clients for whom Geeklog might be a good match.

So I am left still wondering why no one has considered writing a basic Geeklog banner ad plug-in.

How is phpAdsNew "overkill" for your clients? You can configure the program to be very basic to meet your needs and never bother your clients, just upload the banners and info for them.



phpAdsNew works for me. On the sites I run, using geeklog and some not using geeklog. It takes a lot of knowledge and time to write plug-in for a CMS. Maybe you should try?

I don't run their websites, the benefit of a CMS is they are able to manage the day-to-day workings themselves.

I did not mean to criticize, i only asked if anyone knew why this feature did not exist within Geeklog.

Must agree Dirk some sites go over the top with banners and popups, however, we do carry banners on our sites and without it how would we cover the $400 a month overheads. If everyone blocked and our ads diminished we would have to close down. Like most things there are for and against arguments. We don't carry popups decent ad managers don't anymore as so many browsers block them anyway.

That aside we use phpadsnew and lately trying max (a breakaway phpadsnew) and have no trouble - our bigest problem is we have to 'hack' pages to place banners where we want them in a visible but least intrusive place. Skyscrapers and buttons are fine they can go in blocks as phpadsnew generates the code - we always pick 'Frames' mode. Javascript ads are a bit hit and miss especially if you have any other Java on the page.

One of the best features of PHP-Nuke is the banner system. Regardless of ones personal feeling about ads, they area fact fo life.

I personally hate sites with pop-ups and pop-unders and ads that appear when leaving a site or closing the browser. These sites rarely get me to come back (99.999999% of the time, I never go back).

A site that isn't so "in your face" with a simple ad at the top of the page is okay. Slashdot, as an example, has a great ad banner system. I even click on their ads from tiem to time when I see something I like.

Not having an integrated ad banner management system within GL is definately a downfall. Hacking pages to include banner ads is not an option as I want to stay current with GL updates.

I'd write a plug-in, but it would still require changes to the theme pages at the very least, which would get overwritten on the next update (I suspect). Maybe I'm wrong here - haven't really done much reasearch yet.

Anyway, I'd really like to se support for a banner system. Not all sites would use them for ads. Some might use them for other purposes.

Or maybe it already exists. For example, plugins can add code to the site's head section (e.g. for JavaScript or CSS).

I just use a Static Page that is placed at the top of the home page with the ads. It uses Javascript to rotate the ads. Not very effective in promoting the ads, but it helps. I too would like to see an ads plugin.

I've been thinking of using phpAdsNew, and writing a script that will automatically pull the ads from it's database into a PHP enabled Static Page, but I don't have that many advertisers yet, so doing it by hand will have to do for now.
