Plugin textarea design problem

I am working on a plugin which has a textarea form field. Right now if I enter say a URL like this

<a href="blah blah">

 
I have to enter a (backslash) in front of each " (quotes) in order to not get an error and of course there may be other characters but for the most part it's the " (quotes) that are the problem.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to get around this?
