Any benefit (performance, security, etc.) to running mysql on a machine separate from the web server?

From a performance perspective it would only be worth your wild if you had a huge site (tens of thousands of hits per day) and you were running out of processing power. You'd also need to have the expertise to configure mysql and apache to take advantage of being on sepearte (presumably dedicated) servers. The only time I'd see going through all that trouble as being worth it is if you had geeklog running on multiple web servers (on different machines) and wanted them to share a database.
I don't think there is any serious security improvement (any benefits are cancelled out by added risks).
